Electromagnetic separation is a process used to separate materials based on their magnetic properties. Electromagnetic separators, known as dry magnetic separators, use magnets to capture and separate ferromagnetic materials from non-ferromagnetic materials. These separators are commonly used in the mining and minerals processing industries to remove tramp metal and to separate magnetic ores.
One advantage of electromagnetic separation is that it is a dry process, so water is unnecessary to aid in the separation process. This can be beneficial in specific applications where water is not readily available or where water use is impractical.
Electromagnetic separators can separate Magnetite from non-magnetic material.
Device Concept
Magnetite is "ferromagnetic" and is influenced by a magnetic field.
A commingled mixture of 1/8" classified ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic particles enters the feed hopper on the highest point. The interchangeable feed hopper acts as a storage reservoir and a flow rate controller. A smaller 1/8 funnel opening is appropriate when the incoming iron content is above 50%. A 1/2 " funnel opening is suitable when the incoming iron content is below 50%
Gravity pulls the particles through an induced magnetic field as the material exits the funnel. The non-ferromagnetic particle course is not altered and drops straight into the "Ore Jar." The ferromagnetic particles migrate toward the magnet while they are in the magnetic field. Once the particles reach the flume's sidewall (closest to the magnet), they are directed up, over, and into the adjacent flume. Once in the adjoining flume, gravity continues pulling the particles until they eventually break away from the magnet and fall into the (Ferromagnetic Concentrate Jar).
As the unit operates, the operator must observe that no ferromagnetic particles drop into the Ore Par. If ferromagnetic particles are falling into the Ore Pan, it is recommended that the user replace the funnel with a smaller opening.
In this video 1 OZ of gold is mixed with 100 percent Magnetite. The mixture is added to the separator and the results are shown in this video.
